Inside Looking Out (2020)

"Inside Looking Out" is an experimental art project that captures the self-isolation experienced by people from across the world during the COVID-19 lockdown.

For this project, machine learning (a subset of artificial intelligence) was used to create artificial images based on real photographs. A generative adversarial network - or GAN (a class of machine learning frameworks) was trained on over 500 photographs of people's views out their windows. These photographs were collected from family, friends, colleagues and strangers residing in various countries affected by the lockdown.

The resulting artwork collection is an abstract summation of the variety of concrete window dimensions and outside landscapes. These machine generated views represent the shared feeling of loneliness and yearning for the outside world endured during a time of uncertainty.
